Filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra has confirmed that neither the Superman nor Shazam characters will appear in the upcoming “Black Adam” movie at Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line.
There’s been buzz that one or both characters would be making a cameo in the “Black Adam” movie, especially Shazam (Zachary Levi) as both ‘Adam’ and the “Shazam” sequel were shot around the same time and the characters are so intertwined in the comics.
However, Collet-Serra pours cold water on those rumors as he tells Deadline: “Our movie is an original story, by the time the movie ends, he doesn’t know who Shazam or Superman is.”
He also remains unaware of any connected spin-off series in the works (ala HBO Max’s “Peacemaker” & Penguin series).
The film is set for a major push at Comic-Con tomorrow ahead of its October 21st release. With a two-month absence of wide releases beforehand, its expected anticipation will be high for the tentpole when it arrives in its new slot.
Collet-Serra tells the outlet that Clint Eastwood’s original “Dirty Harry” served as a template for the film’s tone:
“I like how he operates in the grey and has a particular sense of morality and justice, similar to some of the movies in the 1970s where the system is broken, and someone needs to do something for justice. Early on, I said that this could be the Dirty Harry of superheroes. Someone who won’t follow the rules but does the right thing. The corrupt system won’t protect the innocent anymore. Black Adam could be that (society’s) hero.”
Warner Bros. Pictures has released new photos from the film too, offering a better look at Johnson in character along with Pierce Brosnan’s Dr. Fate, Quintessa Swindell’s Cyclone and Noah Centineo’s Atom Smasher.
